Welcome to AGATE!

AGATE is a non-profit organization of concerned parents, educators and advocates designed to promote the education and welfare of gifted and talented learners in New York State. AGATE has been developed to:

• Seek and make available national, state, and local resources that contribute to the education of gifted and talented
• Develop, publish, and disseminate appropriate materials for the education of the gifted and talented
• Sponsor and foster activities that stimulate and encourage the development of improved programming practices for the education of the gifted and talented.
• Assume a leadership role in the establishment of statewide conferences, meetings, workshops and other appropriate gatherings for the benefit and welfare of the gifted and talented.

Legislative Update

There bills pending that will affect gifted learners and school districts around the state. For more information about how you can help go to Legislation Update.

AGATE is compiling three lists of school districts: ones that provide gifted education services, ones that do not provide services, and ones that have recently eliminated services (please include the year it was eliminated). Please let us know how your area is doing. These must be accurate lists because the President of AGATE will be sharing this list with the Board of Regents and the State Education Department. This is a grassroots effort because the State Education Department does not ask for or keep this information. They need to know the current status of New York State's schools and gifted education. Read the AGATE document Identification: Overview of Parameters for New York State. This document includes definitions of gifted, NY laws regarding gifted, guidelines from NAGC, test types, rating scales, an annotated bibliography, and suggestions for parent.

Check out the What Works Clearinghouse, established in 2002 by the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences (IES) to provide educators, policymakers, researchers, and the public with a central and trusted source of scientific evidence of what works in education.
